Doing It By the Book
Do not let this Book of the Law
depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may
be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be
prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8)
While we can cut corners, bend the rules and use inferior
materials for some projects, God expects us to do His work by the
book.
We find out about who God is and how He wants us to live by reading
the Bible. The Bible gives examples of what to do and what not to do
through the patriarchs starting with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Throughout the dispensations, God continued to give examples through
kings such as David, Solomon, Josiah, and Zedekiah. We learn life
applications from the major prophets such as Jeremiah, Isaiah,
Ezekiel and Daniel. We learn how obedience is better than sacrifice
through the minor prophets such as Jonah, Joel, Amos, Nahum and
Habakkuk.
The gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John give us a profile of
the coming Messiah while the book of Acts tells us about the birth of
the church and takes us on Paul's three missionary journey. After
Paul planted churches and mentored young pastors, he lets us in on
the instructions through his 13 epistles and letters. Then the 8
general epistles are recorded with information addressed to no
particular person but to everyone. And if we are to ever live by the
book, we should read the book of Revelation to know exactly what must
take place before the consummation of the world.
Since we can never know on our own how God wants it done, we must do
it by the book...the Bible, that is!
